The Dale House

Loop Road Marsh
This building was erected in 1907 as an exhibition hall. It is named for Sir Thomas Dale (1570?-1619) who was Governor of Virginia during 1611-1616.

The Dale House was once a gallery providing a window on the archaeologists' laboratory where the artifacts were washed, numbered, mended, identified, researched, illustrated, and stored. Some of the more interesting artifacts were displayed there as well.

Today the Dale House is the island's cafe where food and drinks can be purchased and enjoyed while watching the James River from the cafe's open patio.
