Once the sun had set at Jamestown, artificial light would be needed in order to see. Most of the men probably had to rely on light from the campfires or, if lucky, hearth fires. The gentlemen would have been able to afford candles made of beeswax and tallow, which would have given them their own private source of light for reading or writing.

A few earthenware Border ware candlesticks have been recovered from the site as well as some fragments from brass ones. The base is missing to this English 16th-century brass candlestick which was found in the 2nd quarter, 17th-century context of Ditch 1.
