Epergne or Sweetmeat Pole
Ireland, ca. 1780
Lead glass and brass
1976.4
Gift of Mrs. Kenneth R. Higgins

Elaborate glass epergnes (also known as sweetmeat poles or trays) were used to display fruits, sweetmeats, jellies and syllabubs at the end of a meal. Glass was considered particularly appropriate because it showed off the colorful foods to their best advantage. This Irish crystal sweetmeat pole descended in the Marshall family and is believed to have been used by the Marshalls for entertaining.
