These drawings of soldiers by Jacob de Gheyn illustrate his The Exercise of Armes. This is a manual commissioned by Johann II of Nassau for training soldiers in the handling of arms. It analyzes each of the movements required for loading and firing a musket as well as for handling a pike. The arms and armor depicted on these soldiers had been standardized in the Netherlands by 1600 and was quickly adapted by the English.
