Archaeologists at Historic Jamestowne have discovered a remarkable piece of slate covered with faint sketches, words and numbers thrown in what appears to be an original Jamestown well abandoned and filled by 1611. The APVA Preservation Virginia Restoration Team is in Fauquier County, working on the boyhood home of the Great Chief Justice John Marshall. Archaeologists at Historic Jamestowne recently unearthed what appears to be the leading edge of a cache of arms and armor discarded by Jamestown colonists 400 years ago in a trash pit that may be an early well inside the north corner of the 1607 James Fort.

Queen Elizabeth II visited Historic Jamestowne on May 4, 2007, in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown in 1607. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh accompanied her on her trip.

In conjunction with its annual meeting, volunteer conservators from The American Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) will spend a day working with the collections at the John Marshall House. The purpose of the project is to provide much-needed conservation for the collection of fine and decorative arts at the John Marshall House, nearly half of which belonged to the Great Chief Justice or his immediate family.

Funded by National Geographic magazine, a microscopic analysis of 400-year-old seeds and plant remains recovered from one of the first wells used by Jamestown colonists in Virginia, including the oldest English Colonial tobacco seeds, provides a snapshot of the surrounding environment in the early 1600s and tangible evidence of the plants, berries and nuts that colonists were gathering and using to survive.

Results from a tooth analysis to determine the birthplace of an unidentified captain buried in Jamestown, Virginia about 400 years ago, suggest other candidates, but do not rule out the possibility that the remains are those of Capt. Bartholomew Gosnold, the principal organizer of the 1607 expedition that established Jamestown as the first permanent English settlement in America.

Objects belonging to Jamestown colonists 400 years ago, unearthed from the long lost James Fort site, will be presented to the public for the first time in the Archaearium, a new exhibition facility at Historic Jamestowne. Without confirmation from DNA, researchers are conducting further studies to test their theory that the mysterious Jamestown Captain, who was buried 400 years ago in Jamestown, Virginia, is Capt. Bartholomew Gosnold, a founding father of America. A digital facial reconstruction has also been developed.

Virginia's preservationists came together in Richmond on Tuesday, 31 January, for Virginia Preservation Day. Attendees had a full day of activities at the General Assembly and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church starting with presentations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Richmond City Council voted Monday night to convey the property at 818 East Marshall Street—The John Marshall House—to APVA Preservation Virginia. The paper was sponsored by Mayor L. Douglas Wilder.

Archaeologists at Historic Jamestowne in Jamestown, Virginia, discovered the remains of the north corner of James Fort, the final undiscovered piece of the original 1607 fort walls, next to what appears to be a 1609 well, hidden beneath the brick ruins of a fireplace from the first Virginia Governor’s house, built in 1611.

British and American scientists were surprised and disappointed to learn that DNA from a woman buried in Shelley church in Suffolk, England, could not be used to conclusively identify the remains of a 17th-century captain discovered in Jamestown, Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in America. Nevertheless, they remain confident, that they have found the grave of Capt. Bartholomew Gosnold, a leader of the Jamestown expedition and a founding father of America.

APVA Preservation Virginia, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, and the Historic Petersburg Foundation, Inc. announce a "hands-on" workshop dealing with flat plaster and historic wooden window repair as well as a slide-illustrated presentation on what causes buildings to fail. The all-day workshop is scheduled for Saturday, November 5th at the Farmers Bank, 19 Bollingbrook Street in Petersburg.

Each year since 1971, APVA Preservation Virginia has presented preservation awards to deserving individuals, private preservation or civic groups, and governmental agencies that have made important contributions to preservation efforts within the Commonwealth. The 2006 awards will be presented at the annual Virginia Legislative Day Reception on January 31, 2006 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Richmond.

The John Marshall House, the 1790 home built in Richmond, Virginia by Chief Justice John Marshall, is the focus of a restoration project that includes work to preserve the federal house as well as research to learn more about its design, construction and evolution. The house was Marshall's home from 1790 until his death in 1835. The year 2005 marks the 250th anniversary of Marshall's birth, and a time of increased activity and visitation at this National Historic Landmark.

This year's "Most Endangered Sites in Virginia" list, selected by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA Preservation Virginia), focuses attention on 11 threatened historic sites throughout the Commonwealth including the White House of the Confederacy; Zirkle Mill in Forestville; "Hayfield", an antebellum mansion on the Rappahannock; other historic homes; ironworks; a bridge; farms; tennis court; store; and the towns of Smithfield and Forestville.

Following APVA's Legislative Day, members and legislators gathered for APVA's Legislative Reception, here APVA Preservation Virginia, America's oldest statewide historic preservation organization, presented their 34th Annual Historic Preservation Awards on January 18, at Saint Paul's Parish Hall, in Richmond, VA. This year's event was sponsored by APVA's William Byrd Branch.

Former "This Old House" TV host, Steve Thomas, will give viewers an inside look at the James Fort excavation at Historic Jamestowne in a new documentary for The History Channel about the Jamestown Rediscovery archaeological research project and the APVA Preservation Virginia's preservation efforts on the island. The one-hour program is expected to air November 27, at 8 p.m., on the "Save Our History" series.

Going back in time may be impossible, but Crank and other artists and designers working under the direction of Jack Fisk, production designer for the movie, are finding that the archaeological research project at the 1607 James Fort site at Historic Jamestowne may be the next best thing.

Archaeologists at Historic Jamestowne in Virginia, recently uncovered a brick-lined cellar filled with 300-year-old intact glass wine bottles. One of the bottles bears a personal seal that may have belonged to a former Virginia governor.

They surprised the world and found the 1607 James Fort site and over half a million artifacts from the first permanent English settlement in America, the birthplace of America, at Historic Jamestowne in Jamestown, Virginia. Now, they're building an Archaearium, an innovative new exhibition facility, to showcase the artifacts and the findings of the world-renowned Jamestown Rediscovery archaeological project.

Reproductions of a silver earpicker, pottery, glassware and other objects treasured by the early settlers at Jamestown nearly 400 years ago and recently unearthed by archaeologists at Historic Jamestowne will make memorable gifts and conversation pieces for history buffs, the hard-to-please and people who seem to have everything.

APVA's John Marshall House will offer a lecture entitled "Thomas Marshall—Patriot Father of Chief Justice John Marshall" on Sunday, January 18 at 2 p.m. The program will focus on the admired life of Thomas Marshall who was the patriarch of a large family.

The APVA's John Marshall House will have period Christmas decorations on display from Thanksgiving, November 28, 2003, to Twelfth Night, January 6, 2004. Groups as well as individual visitors are invited to visit and celebrate the season.

Due to popular demand the APVA's John Marshall House will offer an American Federal Girl Tea on Sunday, November 16 at 2 and 3 p.m.

APVA's John Marshall House will offer a lecture entitled "Passion, Scandal and Honor" on Sunday October 19 at 2 p.m. John Marshall was descended from the celebrated Randolph family of Virginia through his grandmother, Mary Isham Randolph. Tour guide Doug Welsh will discuss the family scandal surrounding his grandmother, her first husband who was rejected by her family, and her second marriage to the Rev. James Keith.

Richmond historians agree that the legendary John Marshall was the city's leading citizen for decades. His many contributions to the early days of our nation are studied by all school children; this 3-hour guided bus tour focuses on his life in Richmond and his many contributions to the city between 1782 and 1835.

In an unprecedented partnership effort, the National Park Service and the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA Preservation Virginia) will combine resources to house their significant Jamestown artifact collections under one roof by expanding the Jamestown Rediscovery Center collections facility at Historic Jamestowne. Construction is scheduled to begin this fall.

Nearly seven years after they announced the discovery of the east corner of the 1607 James Fort, Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA Preservation Virginia) archaeologists recently pinpointed the elusive western wall and north corner of the 1607 James Fort at Historic Jamestowne in Jamestown, Virginia, defining for the first time the true shape and size of the first fort in the first permanent English Settlement in America.

Major archaeological finds discovered this summer at Historic Jamestowne by the Jamestown Rediscovery project team provide the missing pieces to one of the most intriguing puzzles about the first permanent English settlement and the beginnings of America--the true shape and size of the 1607 James Fort.

The year 2003 is the 200th anniversary of Marbury v. Madison, the landmark U. S. Supreme Court-decision that extended the principle of judicial review to the federal courts, making the U.S. Constitution the supreme law of the land. A special program held at the Library of Virginia on Saturday, September 27 will focus on the issues that led up to Marbury v. Madison and its lasting impact on the nation.

The Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities and its local affiliate the William Byrd Branch will sponsor an Antiques Appraisal Fair on Saturday, September 20 at the John Marshall House from 1-4 p.m.
